Westminster Pauses Future Development

On Monday, July 23rd, Westminster City Council approved a moratorium on new development for two-thirds of the city while improvements are made to its sewage system. The affected area is roughly north of 92nd.  This is in response to extremely fast growth in Westminster including a subsequent 40% increase in sewage flows during the past ten years and the capacity of the city’s Big Dry Creek sewer system. Mayor Herb Atchison told Fox31 that the plan is for a complete upgrade of the system to prepare for growth in the coming years.  30-40 planned development projects may be affected by the moratorium.

While this impacts a large percentage of the municipality it will not impact our Westminster Station holdings nor the Opportunity Zone designation that extends from the station area south to Highway 76. Development could actually be pushed to these areas and the new Westminster Downtown area since they are on a different sewer system and are excluded from the development moratorium.
