Solving the nation’s affordable housing shortage is not only a moral imperative, but also an economic one for local and regional communities. Research conducted by the ICMA, a leading organization of local government professionals, found that housing affordability is increasingly cited as a barrier to economic development for communities.

The National League of Cities, an organization comprised of city, town, and village leaders, also advises its members on the value of affordable housing development for their local economies. The NLC states the following economic benefits for communities that support and engage in the development of affordable housing:

  • Access to affordable housing allows businesses to have access to a reliable workforce.
  • Mixed-income developments reduce poverty concentration and allow for more opportunities for community diversity and economic mobility.
  • New developments are usually in underutilized areas that may be blighted or low density. Building new housing, especially in mixed-use, mixed-income developments, increases the value of the property on which it is built and increases the tax base of the community.
  • Affordable housing at all income levels means that community residents have more disposable income which can be spent on local businesses and services.
