Once again we applaud Gov. Polis on his recent amendment and extension of his September executive order to limit certain evictions to provide relief to Coloradans affected by COVID-19. With his original moratorium lapsing in June, residential and commercial renters have more recently been protected only by the nationwide eviction moratorium put in place by the Centers for Disease Control in early September. While this national order was welcomed by many, protections are determined on a case-by-case basis, allowing for many in need to fall through the cracks.
Our Governor’s leadership to protect Coloradans during this unprecedented time ensures that any renter who can show financial hardship due to COVID-19 will be afforded additional protections that extend beyond those of the national order at least through November 21. While this statewide order is welcomed, it is only temporary – and we as communities must continue to consider the ways in which we will support those in need through the end of the year and into 2021 as this pandemic continues to reap havoc on our nation’s economy and our workforce. Additional funding is required to ensure people remain housed and landlords solvent, and we must come together to identify resources that can be allocated to solve this growing issue.
