The 2017-2018 LIFE HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) Program, served 42 children. Our bilingual graduation was held at Front Range Community College on May 24th, 2018 when 8 children graduated and are on their way to Kindergarten. The graduates received a diploma, a backpack filled with school supplies, and a $25.00 gift card for additional school supplies. HIPPY now has 16 children continuing into their second year.
The free 2 year program coincides with the school calendar preparing families for the school schedule. Through weekly visits with trained Ameri-Corps home visitors, parents are trained to use curriculum with their children. HIPPY home visitors spend one hour a week with parents for 30 weeks. Parents then spend 15-20 minutes per day with their child completing the activities. The program includes 9 story books and all school supplies and materials.
HIPPY recognizes parents as a child’s first teacher and empowers parents to play an important role in their education as well as advocate for their child through school. The program utilizes engagement between the home visitors and parents during home visits, allowing parents to assume the role of teacher with their child. The home visitors also receive an educational award for their service encouraging continuing education throughout the program.
